Stage director
Regarded by critics as a “sure bet” in today’s opera milieu, stage director Alain Gauthier is continuing to make his mark in north-American opera houses. Alain Gauthier studied acting at the Université du Québec à Montréal where he also developed his directing skills. As an apprentice director with the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal, Gauthier confirmed his talents for stage direction. At the Opéra de Montréal, Alain Gauthier also applied his staging expertise to a number of important works of the repertoire, including Suor Angelica, Il tabarro, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Pagliacci/Gianni Schicchi (Winner of an Opus Award for Best production of the year) and La bohème. Elsewhere in Canada, he was invited to stage Carmen for the Edmonton Opera, as well as concert and opera tours for Jeunesses Musicales of Canada. Alain Gauthier was also immensely successful in remounting the Glimmerglass Opera production of L’étoile for the Opéra de Montréal, the Cincinnati Opera, the Austin Lyric Opera, and the New York City Opera. Among other projects, Gauthier is preparing a new production of Faust, which will close the Opéra de Montréal’s 2011-2012 season.
